Keszthely
Cultural spots in every steps
Keszthely offers you the most beautiful built heritage of Balaton, as well as exciting cultural relaxation opportunities, in addition to swimming and water experiences!
Culture, history, education, religion, art, gastronomy, turn-of-the-century-style buildings – you can find all of the above in one place, the city’s Main Square, which is also the center of the city at all times.

Historic city center
The second largest city by the lake
The Main Square of Keszthely plays a central role in the life of the city: here are the Town Hall, the Gothic parish church as one of the oldest buildings in the city, the theater and two schools.
he Main Square is filled with colorful programs throughout the year. The Keszthely City Carnival enjoys great popularity, the longest masquerade parade on Balaton, where hundreds of people dress up to drive away the winter. On the first weekend of June, the city’s celebration day is held at the Main Square of Keszthely, where the Balaton settlement celebrates with concerts, cultural, entertainment and children’s programs. The summer’s popular event is the KeszthelyFest, when the Keszthely downtown is filled with melodies and flavors. On the first weekend of September, barrel organs line up, filling the Main Square with music and good mood. The year is closed with Advent, Christmas and New Year’s programs in the city center. The novelty of 2021 was the ice skating rink created for children.
The Festetics Castle in Keszthely from the mid-18th century for 200 years was the home of one of the most significant noble families in Hungary, the Festetics family. Today it operates as a museum under the name Helikon Castle.
The building of the castle, its interior design and furnishing were partially preserved during the Second World War, unlike most Hungarian castles. After the Festetics family left in September 1944, part of the collection was looted by German and Hungarian soldiers and the local population, however, the original furnishing items that can still be seen in the exhibition today were saved.

Keszthely
Take a walk in the cradle of Keszthely's cultural life and discover its famous buildings, from the Main Square, through the Promenade, to the Festetics Castle. Going off the main line, there are also interesting things to find in the capital of Lake Balaton, such as the City Market, the Castle Garden. In the city center there are also many churches, statues and museums waiting to be discovered.
The beautiful landscapes of the deservedly famous northern coast of Balaton are easily accessible. It is worth planning bicycle or walking tours, while tasting delicious wines and food.
